What Subject Filters Do

Subject filters let you create more than one Newsfeed page on your website, with each Newsfeed page displaying posts on different topics. Use individual Newsfeeds to showcase things like:

  • Upcoming social events and activities
  • Community-related projects and upkeep
  • Dedicated pages for active discussion of specific topics

 How to Set Up Subject Filters

  1. In Site Setup, locate your Newsfeed page in the vertical menu and click its name to load the page for editing.
  2. In the main editing window, check the Enable Subject Filtering checkbox.
  3. Click Add/Edit/Delete Subjects to create a filter.
  4. Enter a name for the filter in the Subject box. Use a self-explanatory term that describes the focus of the filter.
  5. Check Is Private if you want the filter to be private. Posts under a private subject will not appear in the Recent News widget on the public Home page.
  6. Click Update to save the filter.
  7. Repeat this process for each filter you want to create on this Newsfeed.

 Activating Filters

Creating a filter does not automatically make it active.

  1. After creating your filter(s), click the Newsfeed Subject dropdown menu to open it.
  2. Check the box in front of each filter name you want to activate.

 Important Behaviors to Know

  • Filters are page-specific. Filters created on one Newsfeed do not appear on or apply to any other Newsfeed-templated page — they are standalone and only work on the page where you created them.
  • Older posts are excluded. Posts created before you set up filters (i.e., posts with no filter applied) will not show up on any filtered Newsfeed.
  • Unfiltered Newsfeeds show everything. If a Newsfeed has no filters set up, it displays all posts and does not respond to filters.
  • Single-filter pages have no selector. If a Newsfeed has only one filter, you won't see any filter-selection option in the posting interface.
  • Multi-filter pages require a selection. If a Newsfeed has more than one filter, you'll choose from a dropdown of filters when creating a post — this determines which active filter(s) apply to that post.
  • Viewing filters are temporary. On a multi-subject Newsfeed, members and admins can use filters to control which posts they see, but the filter selection is not permanent — it resets when the browser window/tab is closed or you navigate away from the page.
