What Are Member Tags?
Member tags are labels you attach to member accounts in HOA Start. They let administrators:
- Restrict access to website pages, documents, forms, and other features to only the members who hold a specific tag
- Control who receives invoices for a specific Member dues item
- Determine who can vote in a survey or participate in a specific feature
Tags come in two types:
- Committee tags – created automatically whenever you create a committee and add members to it. These are marked with an asterisk (*) in front of the tag name and cannot be removed through the Tags screen (see below).
- Manual tags – created by administrators to represent anything from a book club to a volunteer group to "billed party" designations for a household.
Where to Review Your Tags
- Click on the Membership tab in the vertical Admin Dashboard.
- Click on the Tags tab.
- The TAGS window opens, listing every tag your organization has created.
From this screen you can:
- Search for a tag – type all or part of a tag name into the "Search Tags" box and click Search. Note that you can only search by tag name, not by the name of a member the tag is applied to.
- Sort the tag list – click a column header (or the pair of arrows beside it) to sort by NAME (alphabetical, the default) or by MEMBERS (the number of members carrying that tag). Click again to reverse the sort order. Sort order resets when you close or reload the browser window.
- See how many members have a tag – the MEMBERS column shows a running count for each tag.
- View exactly who has a tag applied – click the View Members icon (the eyeball) in the ACTIONS column to open the "Tag Members" window, which lists the name and email address of every member carrying that tag.
How to Delete a Member Tag
If you no longer need a tag, remove it completely:
- Click on the Membership tab in the vertical Admin Dashboard, then click Tags.
- In the TAGS window, locate the tag you want to remove.
- In the ACTIONS column, click the Delete icon (trash can).
- In the DELETE TAG? confirmation window, click Delete Tag to remove it permanently.
- To back out without deleting, click Cancel, press Esc, or click the X in the top right of the window.
[!] Important: Deleting a Tag Is Systemwide
Tag deletion is holistic — it removes the tag everywhere it was used at once. If the tag was:
- Restricting visibility of a website page or feature,
- Determining who could vote in a survey, or
- Controlling who was invoiced by a Member dues item,
...all of those restrictions disappear the moment the tag is deleted. Double-check what a tag is being used for (via "View Members" and by checking any pages, forms, or dues items you applied it to) before deleting it, since this action changes the behavior of those features immediately and cannot be undone.
Can I Delete a Committee Tag?
No. Committee tags (the ones with the asterisk) are generated automatically and can't be deleted from the Tags screen. To remove a committee tag, you must remove the committee members and delete the committee itself — the tag disappears along with it.
How Tags Get Applied to Members in the First Place
Tags are added to member accounts in three ways:
- Individually in the Member Details window (click "+Add Tag")
- In bulk through Members > Members Actions > "Add a Tag to Filtered Members"
- Via Member data import
