Can I bulk edit Member settings?
Bulk Edit Member Settings
Also searched as: edit multiple members at once, mass update members, bulk update member permissions
If you need to change membership settings for multiple Members, editing individual records one at a time quickly becomes tedious. Instead, use the Bulk Edit Filtered Members feature to make all your changes in one step.
Step 1: Open the Members Window
- Click on the Membership tab in the vertical menu on the left side of the Admin Dashboard.
- Click on the Members tab to open the "MEMBERS" window.
Step 2: Narrow Down Your Member List (Optional but Recommended)
Before editing, use the Search capabilities to limit which members' settings you'll change — for example, everyone on a specific committee, everyone on a particular street, or everyone tagged as a project volunteer.
Search options include: First Name, Last Name, Email Address, Phone Number, Address, City, State, Zip, Tag, and Custom Fields*. (Fields marked with an asterisk support multi-word search terms.)
Tip: Search works best with short, specific terms - a single word, a few letters, or part of a name or address. Typing multiple words (like a full name) actually widens your results instead of narrowing them, since each word is matched separately. For the fewest, most accurate results, search with just one term at a time. Because bulk editing can make sweeping changes to critical Member-status settings, confirm you've selected the correct members before proceeding.
Step 3: Start the Bulk Edit
- Open the Members Actions dropdown menu at the top right of the Members window.
- Select Bulk Edit Filtered Members.
Step 4: Choose What to Change
The "EDITING XX MEMBERS" window opens. The number in the title reflects either your total community count or the number of members matching your search/filter.
Select the settings you want to change and how to reconfigure them:
- Admin Privileges – No Changes / Make Admin / Remove Admin
- Enable Chat – No Changes / Enable Chat / Disable Chat
- Blocked From Newsfeed – No Changes / Block From Newsfeed / Remove Block From Newsfeed
- Receive Text Messages – No Changes / Receive Text Messages / Don't Receive Text Messages
- Appear in Member Directory – No Changes / Appear in Member Directory / Remove From Member Directory
Notes:
- No Save button appears until you change at least one setting — only a Cancel button shows initially.
- If a bulk edit activates a setting a member already has (for example, turning on text messaging for someone who already has it enabled), that member's record simply stays unchanged.
If You Enable "Appear in Member Directory"
Activating this option reveals additional data-sharing choices, such as:
- Share Address in Member Directory
- Share Email in Member Directory
- Share Phone Number in Member Directory
If your Member Form has custom fields marked as shareable in the Member Directory, those fields also appear here as additional sharing options. If no custom fields exist or none are marked shareable, only the standard options display.
Step 5: Save and Confirm
- Click Save to apply your changes.
- The "CONFIRM CHANGES FOR XX MEMBERS" window appears, summarizing exactly what will change.
- Review the summary, then activate the I Understand checkbox.
- Click Confirm Changes to complete the process.
Note: changes apply immediately but can be undone using the same Bulk Edit feature.
