Are there best practices for adding images to site content?
Quick answer: Never copy-and-paste an image directly into an e-blast, Newsfeed post, or website text widget. It looks like it worked, but your audience won't actually see the image. Always attach or embed it instead.
Why This HappensPasting an image (from Preview, Paint, Photoshop, etc.) inserts it as raw data your editor can display to you, but that data doesn't survive being sent out or published. The result:
- E-blast: You see the image while composing, but recipients get a blank space -- it never shows in the sent email.
- Newsfeed post: The image won't appear on the post, and pasting also slows down your whole website.
- Website text widget: It looks fine in Site Setup, but disappears once the page is live.
There are two reliable ways to add an image, and which one you use depends on where you're posting.
Option 1: Attach the File (Easiest)Works for: e-blasts and Newsfeed posts
- Below the message/post editor, find Upload photos or documents.
- Click Browse and select the file from your computer or device.
- Done -- the file is now attached.
- Go to Features > Documents and upload your image to the Document Repository. Make sure both the file and its folder are set to public/visible. File must be under 15 MB.
- In the Documents list, click the Copy File Link icon next to your file (nothing visibly happens -- the link is now on your clipboard).
- Open the place you're editing: E-blast at Membership > Members > Message Filtered Members; Newsfeed at Manage Site > Public Site, then the Newsfeed page and + Create (or the three-dots menu > Edit on an existing post); Website widget at Manage Site > Site Setup, select the page, hover the widget, then Edit Paragraph (or Edit Contact Info).
- Click where you want the image to appear, then click the Image tool in the toolbar.
- Paste your copied link into the URL field of the Image Properties window.
- (Optional) Adjust width, height, or other display settings.
- Click OK, then finish and send/save/publish as normal (for website pages, don't forget Save and Publish).
Size limit: All attached and embedded images combined must stay under 15 MB, or the message won't send (or, for Newsfeed, the file won't attach at all).
Option 2: Embed the File InlineWorks for: e-blasts, Newsfeed posts, and website text widgets. Use this when you want the image to appear within the text, not just tacked on as an attachment.
Bottom LineIf you find yourself hitting Ctrl+V to drop an image straight into a message or post, stop -- upload it to Documents (or attach it) first. It takes one extra step but guarantees your members actually see it.
